Wreck Tour "La Caleta"

For wreck diving enthusiasts we have a very special treat:

A trip to the "Hickory" the famous wreck of treasure hunter Tracy Bowden as well as to the wreck of "El Limon".

The "Limon" is certainly one of the best preserved wrecks in the underwater national park of "La Caleta". The whole superstructure is still intact and divers get the impression that it went down just yesterday. Once the former tug boat was a powerful ship and today she has her resting place in 22m/80ft of water leaning to it is starboard side on a sandy area. The 3 propellers are still clearly visible.

Today the "Hickory" lays also leant to it is starboard side in approx. 18m/60ft of water in the middle of a nicely composed coral reef. The hull, especially at bow and stern, are encrusted with lots of different brain corals and sponges. Once famous as one of the most beautiful wrecks in the Caribbean it still preserved it's charm even after Hurricane "George" struck the Dominican Republic in 1998.

The substructures are still recognizable and a good hiding place for lots of fish like glassfish. Many invertebrates seek protection inside the wreck and therefore it is a perfect spot for macro photography. Approx. 30m/100ft on the starboard side you find an old 17th century cannon also sunk by the crew of Tracy Bowden, now a silent witness of former centuries. On the port side divers find an old shark cage.
